We're having some fun in IG stories with a quiz 🤓 Here are a few facts about canine diabetes and nutrition!

1. Diabetes is rarely diagnosed in dogs who are young or puppies (juvenile). Mylah was diagnosed at 10 months old with juvenile, type 1, diabetes. We stumped vets all over town!

2. Just as diet is critical to human diabetics, it is critical to canines with the disease.

3. Carbohydrates are not necessarily bad for diabetics - it depends on the type of carbohydrate. Carbohydrates that contain fiber and can slow the rate of digestion can work very well for diabetic dogs. These types of fibrous carbs can slow down the spike in blood sugar. It's also important to take into consideration the glycemic index/load GI/GL of carbs. For example, white rice is high on the GI and does not contain much fiber whereas barley has a lower GI and fiber present making it a more ideal carbohydrate for diabetics. The same goes for vegetables! Carrots have a higher GI vs. kale which is much lower.

4. A high-fat diet is not always ideal for a diabetic dog. The pancreas of a diabetic dog is already compromised and many diabetic dogs will suffer from pancreatitis or EPI as a result of their diabetes. It's important to look very closely at the fat content and monitor your dog for any signs of pancreatitis or EPI. Additionally, many diabetic dogs often have secondary GI issues such as IBD. High-fat diets are not ideal to feed with this condition.

5. High-fat content is why we need to be careful with raw diets for diabetics. Not only are diabetics immune-compromised but most commercial raw diets are over 30% fat on a dry matter basis - this is often too high fat to safely feed to a diabetic. Every dog is different but be cautious about the amount of fat present in raw diets when it comes to diabetic dogs.

2021 marks Mylah turning 10 years old and that is

2021 marks Mylah turning 10 years old and that is a huge deal to me. I read that the median survival for diabetic dogs is two years and that’s if they make it past the first three months after the initial diagnosis. Mylah was diagnosed with diabetes at 10 months old. Over nine years she’s been diabetic. It’s come with many challenges, but I’m really proud of her life and it’s span. It’s been one full of adventure including tons of activities like swimming, hiking mountains, and traveling.

Mylah is ultimately the reason I got into canine nutrition and formulation, and the catalyst behind starting Holistic Pet Wellness to help other diabetic dog parents feed their dogs better.

While Mylah is slowing down and is mostly blind as she enters year 10, she keeps showing us her will to keep going- playing, rolling on the carpet and couches, playing fetching and more. So cheers to my little Mylah on another birthday. She’s beat the odds and then some! 🥳

A piece of my heart is missing as Hudson is no longer with us. I wrote this letter to him during the days leading up to, and the day we said goodbye. Thank you to everyone who loved him 💜

Dear Hudson,
I know your life didn’t start out easy but I hope that once you got to be with Jeff, Izzy, and I that it got a little easier and happier. I knew you were special the moment I met you in the shelter’s office. You were only five months old and being given up on. I told you to sit and you did as you looked up in my eyes with an enthusiastic tail wag—a combo I’d come to know and love forever. The moment that sealed you were mine was the big bear hug you gave me shortly after.

I will remember how the top of your head down through your ears was so velvety soft. How warm you were to cuddle with (sometimes even a furnace), how you hogged the bed and your snoring kept me awake some nights. Your bark at someone out the window or at the door would give me a heart attack but somehow I felt safer knowing whoever was out there heard your protective bark.

When you liked to take walks I walked down the sidewalk with you with so much pride. This is my big Hudson and I knew no one would mess with us because of you.

I know the world was tough and traumatic for you from birth. Born into a shitty puppy mill, brought to a pet store, bought and given up at 5 months. It was a lot for such a little boy’s life. Over 11+ years we tried to make it better for you so you knew we’d never ever leave you- we’d always take you with us or leave you with your favorite Auntie Melissa to babysit.

You became an experienced traveler after trips to to places like Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Iowa. You were at our wedding weekend! You climbed mountains, swam in many lakes, and hiked many forests. You moved apartments and homes, not once or twice, but SEVEN times with us. You saw me through my dog attack recovery, my pregnancy and postpartum. You saw your dad through his hernia surgery, many times he got the flu, or had a hangover 😉. Human birthdays, dog birthdays, deaths in the family, births in the family. {continued in comments}
