🐶 When Meatball first came to me as a foster, bloodwork from the vet showed he was pretty anemic. The test results helped me determine the amount of iron he needed to be added to his diet. Enter: beef spleen.

→ An iron-rich, nutrient-dense lean organ meat and one of my favorite foods to work with when formulating diets as well. As little as 10g of raw beef spleen provides 4.46mg of iron and when cooked it provides 3.94mg of iron. Whether cooked or raw it’s also packed with
-potassium
-selenium
-phosphorus
-magnesium
+ a boost of calcium, Vitamin C, and Vitamin B12

🩸Spleen has 5x more heme-iron than liver!! Heme-iron (iron from meat) is best absorbed in the body by dogs vs. iron from plants which is poorly absorbed by dogs.

🐕 Heme iron is critical to many metabolic functions including oxygen transportation and maintaining normal production of cells and hormones among many other functions. Iron is an *essential nutrient* for dogs meaning they must consume it in order to gain and use it within their body. It’s vital for their health and life.

✓ Once I began adding heme iron from spleen into Meatball’s diet, he thrived. He went from unable to put on weight to forming major muscles and having more energy.

💊When I can source beef spleen and cook it I will feed it to him that way. Otherwise I use the beef spleen supplement from Code Age or Ancestral Supplements - @thecodeage @ancestralsupplements both fantastic products.

🩸Anemia in dogs can occur from a wide variety of reasons from poor genetics to complications from intestinal parasites such as giardia or coccidia. I believe Meatball’s anemia was from having giardia when he was first rescued and undergoing all the trauma he went through with his legs as well. Now, his blood work is perfect and no signs of anemia are present!

Jumping into her 12th year with no signs of melanoma spreading!!! It’s been a little over a year since I found a growth on Izzy’s paw that was malignant cutaneous melanoma, the doctors said it was aggressive. They said most dogs live for a year as it usually spreads to their lungs. There has been no sign of spreading to this day, I am SO incredibly grateful. Izzy has barely slowed down, as you can see, which I’m also SO grateful for. I need this dog in my life and so does the new baby girl we’re welcoming soon. Happiest Birthday, Iz!! I love you!!

PS- If you’re dealing with a cancer diagnosis with your dog please know that all hope is not lost. Treatments, diets, supplements, exercise- they all can work. It’s hard to have faith, I know I’ve had my moments, but every extra day you get your dog by your side is one to celebrate 💗

Pancreatitis can be a very tricky disease to manag

Pancreatitis can be a very tricky disease to manage in dogs from a dietary standpoint, there is a lot that needs to be taken into consideration. The pancreas is so important in the digestion process that when it can no longer function correctly serious health complications occur. The right diet for a dog with pancreatitis can be life-saving but also needs to be individualized. Some dogs with pancreatitis can go a little over the 10% fat on a dry matter basis (DM), some have to stay well below 10% fat. We hear all the time in pop-science circles how carbs are going to kill your dog for xyz reason but for a dog with pancreatitis, carbs often keep them alive and thriving because they cannot digest high fat and some high protein diets. It is a delicate balance.

Pictured is Tini who I recently formulated a diet for as he was so sick from pancreatitis. After being diagnosed by his veterinarian, he underwent treatment to get him feeling better. His owners wanted to make sure he was getting high-quality food that wouldn't cause a flare again. He is now doing very well with his formulated diet and that makes me SO HAPPY!

Food Ingredients:
Fat-free ground turkey
White rice
Cottage cheese 1%
Beef liver
Sweet potato
Peas
Green beans
Banana

In conservative amounts:
Fish oil
Hemp oil

Vitamins & Minerals Mix:
Bone meal, Zinc, Kelp, Magnesium, Selenium, Choline, Bcomplex, Beef Spleen supplement, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Taurine
